Chrysanthemum karakusa linking the seven treasures

Chrysanthemum karakusa linking the seven treasures

In this pattern, chrysanthemum karakusa arabesques connect what are known in Buddhist philosophy as the seven treasures: gold, silver, crystal, lapis lazuli, agate, coral, and shell. The “wheels” express the importance of harmonious interpersonal connection, reminding us that everything exists as the latest link in a long chain of events. The spiraling chrysanthemums are also connected by the karakusa, as if they were included in the seven treasures as well. The whole is anchored by a central straight line. The result is a symbolic design in which elements that look disconnected at a glance are, in fact, connected by lines both curved and straight.
