Long, gently curved knife marks that seem to periodically turn on their heels and form sharp cusps cross a field of cerulean blue urushi with lines of glimmering gold. The hint of presence that has now departed, leaving only its tracks, seems to drift above the round lacquerware. This work was created by shaping the basic wood carving, allowing some time to pass, and then completing it by carving in the tracks. It seems to reflect the span of inner contemplation on the artisan’s part.
