“On Mount Kataoka, where my lord goes hunting, today’s hail has surely fallen on the clustered brush.” This poem from the Shugyokushu, an anthology from the late Kamakura period (1185-1333), evokes the brush that grows in clusters on Mount Kataoka in Nara. This piece, too, is formed like a cluster of brush, and the gleaming of its hand-carved, lacquered surface seems to capture a moment in which the fine leaves of the brush sway in the wind. Combined with nuts or dried flowers, this piece can bring a rustic mountain sensibility into any home.
