Water chestnuts and wave rounds - Rose on charcoal black

Stylized water chestnuts are a venerable decorative motif. They were used in western Asia over two thousand years ago, and appear on Japanese pottery from the prehistoric Jomon period. During the Heian period (794-1185), water chestnuts became a popular courtly design. Hanabishi or diamond shaped “flowering water chestnuts” are a four-petaled karakusa arabesque interpretation of this motif. The lines of hanabishi in this design were inspired by the vitality of flowering plants, which endures in an unbroken chain. The wave round motif represents the shores where water chestnuts grow, and evokes water’s role supporting the circle of life. Furnish your living space with these symbols designed to draw your mind toward the eternal now.
