This pattern woven in colored, gold, and silver thread is inspired by the phoenixes and karakusa arabesques on the reverse of the ancient eight-lobed bronze mirror (decorated with lacquer and gold and silver heidatsu) from the Shosoin Treasure House. Using a unique technique where each pattern is woven independently, the central karakusa and the phoenixes and clouds around it feel as raised and three-dimensional as embroidery. The phoenixes, which bear budding flowers in their beaks, are filled with the joy of life.
