This pattern woven in colored, gold, and silver thread is inspired by the phoenixes and karakusa arabesques on the reverse of the ancient eight-lobed bronze mirror (decorated with lacquer and gold and silver heidatsu) from the Shosoin Treasure House. Using a unique technique where each pattern is woven independently, the central karakusa and the phoenixes and clouds around it feel as raised and three-dimensional as embroidery. The phoenixes, which bear budding flowers in their beaks, are filled with the joy of life. The fabric is woven to be extremely thin and light, and when it catches the light the phoenixes and wave tatewaku base pattern gleam splendidly.
